John V. Bowlus is the Founder and Director of Energy Straits, an Istanbul-based advisory on midstream energy geopolitics across the Middle East and Eurasia. He also serves as Senior Advisor, Turkey at Horizon Engage. His research examines how transit corridors and pipeline politics have shaped energy security — from Cold War-era chokepoint crises to the present Hormuz standoff — and what that history means for resilience across a fracturing regional order. His writing has appeared in Foreign Policy and War on the Rocks, and his academic work has been published in journals including Diplomatic History and Middle Eastern Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in history from Georgetown University and previously taught at Kadir Has University's Center for Energy and Sustainable Development in Istanbul.
